Steel welded animals (Series development)

I developed a series of welded animal heads at my residency at Bervic Engineering, and the intent is to experiment with finishes using resin, spray paint and wire, for example. Following sculpture completion, I will look to illuminating each of these pieces from within.
It is with immense gratitude to the 2025 Haymes Family Foundation grant awarded by Ballarat Art Foundation that I am able to continue to develop the practice of steel welding, as well as the development of this series and illumination techniques with neon and plasma.

Following advice from the Ballarat Arts Foundation, I decided to learn how to create neon art and signage from Steven Cole at Cole’s Neon Shop. I started in November 2025 with enclosed plasma experimentation and traditional neon art.

Glassblowing for plasma (Series development)
Materials: Blown glass infused with plasma (inert gas) and excited on an electromagnetic field
Status: Ongoing, since November 2025
Following advice from Steven Cole, I undertook a “Fundamentals of Glassblowing” course at Studio Dokola from Jan-April 2026. This is so I can control the shapes that I want from molten glass, rather than trying to achieve desired results through blowing neon tubes.

Glassblowing Study
Materials: Blown glass
Size: Smallest work measures 5 x 5 x 10cm and largest 14 x 20 x 20cm.
Status: Completed study - these works will be pumped with plasma where appropriate.
Year: 2026
Next phase: Take the lessons learned from this study to develop a new suite of work for exhibition at Art Space Ballarat (February, 2028).
Transcendence
Materials: Fused glass arched window sculpture, gold lustre
Size: 50 x 85 x 3cm

The vision of this glass art piece was gifted to me during a meditation a year ago, and the process of making this work come to life was absolutely delightful.
The moons are double-fused to give them extra “melt” and there are several layers to the flames that makes them so vibrant and rich. The extra details on the face, hair and bodice are painted using fusing ink and gold lustre.
