Acid Goth Debut - Brunswick Street Gallery
Acid Goth solo show at Brunswick Street Gallery, Jan 2025
Acid Goth is Georgie Stokol’s debut solo exhibition, featuring an electric fusion of vibrant acrylics. Inspired by Melbourne’s street art and nightlife, metal music, and the natural world, these works explore the mysterious and unsettling moments of embracing the unknown and surrendering to darkness. The high-contrast paintings are crafted to evoke curiosity or discomfort, with each viewing revealing new details and secrets within their strange, immersive worlds. Georgie uses fluoro acrylic ink to create dynamic movement in her pieces, allowing the dripping ink to shape her work in unexpected ways. For her, the process is a balance between letting the paint flow freely and guiding it into deliberate forms—often evoking an organic reclamation or decaying of industrial spaces.
~~~ ARTIST REFLECTION ~~~
On January 25th 2025, as part of the Midsumma festival, Acid Goth debuted at Brunswick Street Gallery. This was my first solo show, and it was so much more work than I expected! Such a great learning experience, and I am grateful to Conor Smyth and the team at Brunswick Street Gallery for supporting me through the process.
Through this exhibition, I learned about what it takes to pull a show together - from marketing, to pricing, to the copy that gallerygoers will read when they are through the door. It was so important to me that people would have an immediate visual impact upon walking into the room, and see the intensity of pink and black knowing immediately if they want to venture forth. It was this intent that led me to learn to create my own floating frames for the exhibition (don’t they look cool?)!
All my friends in Melbourne attended and the night was amazing. I met fellow LGBT+ artists and enjoyed the other wonderful exhibitions. One of my pieces sold on the night, and it was a such a humbling experience to think about my work in someone else’s living room. The night continued with cocktails on a rooftop bar, and a celebration to the beginning of my journey of becoming a successful artist.
